Cobia Fish
(Rachycentron canadum)
Rachycentron are also known as Cobia and should only be in zoos or very large aquariums as they grow very quickly and can reach over 6 feet. Cobia are long living and careful thought should be given before adding to most hom aquariums. Cobia are not reef safe, they feed on crabs, squid and other fish. Rachycentron are natural voracious, carnivores that hunt in packs often following sharks, turtles and rays to scavenge in the wild. A diet rich in meaty foods should be provided.
Cobia Fish are also known as Black Kingfish, Black Salmon, Ling, Lemonfish, Crabeater, Prodigal Son, or Codfish. They can grow to be very large, in fact they can reach lengths of 78" and weights of up to 170 pounds. Rarely seen in the aquarium trade due to its large size as well as this fish is typically a game fish or sold commercially for its firm meat texture and excellant flavor. Cobia are a dark brown color that fades to white on its belly. They will have two brown horizontal side stripes that may darken during spawning.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 500 gallons or larger for this species.
