Purple Tree Gorgonian
(Eunicea sp.)
Eunicea corals are found in various marine environments, ranging from shallow tropical reefs to deeper waters. These Sea Fan corals are photosynthetic and contain symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae within their tissues. These algae utilize sunlight to produce energy through photosynthesis, providing the coral with nutrients. Eunicea corals can be moderately challenging to care for in aquariums. They prefer stable water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and water quality. Providing moderate to strong water flow and moderate lighting is recommended. Regular feeding with small particulate foods, such as phytoplankton or zooplankton, will help meet their nutritional needs. Eunicea corals generally have a higher tolerance to copper compared to stony corals. However, it's important to maintain copper levels within safe limits in the aquarium to avoid any potential harm to the corals and other tank inhabitants. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Eunicea Corals are also known as Knobby Sea Rods or Candalabra Corals. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade. The branches can be white, cream, yellow, green, purple or brown. When placed in a well-maintained aquarium with appropriate lighting and water flow, Eunicea corals can create a visually stunning display. Eunicea Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
