Purple Ribbon Gorgonian
(Pterogorgia guadalupensis)
Pterogorgia corals are found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico typically inhabiting reef slopes. Pterogorgia have photosynthetic zooxanthellae algae living within their tissues. These algae provide the corals with energy through photosynthesis. Pterogorgia corals also have the ability to capture and consume small food particles from the water column to supplement their nutrition. Pterogorgia are considered moderately challenging to care for by intermediate to experienced aquarists. They prefer moderate to strong lighting and moderate water flow. Pterogorgia corals can be an intriguing addition to a marine aquarium. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Pterogorgia Corals are also be known as Lace or Ribbon Gorgonians. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Pterogorgia Corals are quite beautiful , normally yellow or green but have been seen either orange or purple. Pterogorgia Corals will vary greatly in size.
