Red Australomussa Brain Coral
(Australomussa rowleyensis)
Australomussa corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the waters around Australia, including the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit shallow reef environments, often growing on hard substrates like rocks and coral rubble. Like most corals, Australomussa corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae. These algae reside within their tissues and provide the corals with energy through photosynthesis. They will also benefit from supplemental feeding they have extended feeding tentacles that can capture small zooplankton and other meaty foods. Target feeding with coral-specific foods or small meaty particles can help promote their growth and overall health. Australomussa corals are considered relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for hobbyists with some experience in maintaining a reef aquarium. They are hardy and can tolerate a range of water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels. Low to moderate lighting and low to medium water flow are ideal for their growth and overall health. Australomussa corals generally have a moderate tolerance to copper. However, it is important to maintain stable and appropriate copper levels in the aquarium. Copper-based medications should be used with caution and following proper dosing instructions, taking into consideration the sensitivity of other tank inhabitants. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Australomussa Corals are very similar to Scolymia corals. Not often seen in the aquarium trade. The Australomussa Corals are most commonly seen with shades of blue gray, cream, green red or yellow. Australomussa Corals vary greatly in size and formation.
