Green Blastomussa Wellsi Coral
(Blastomussa wellsi)
Blastomussa corals are found in the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines. They typically inhabit reef slopes and lagoons. Like most corals, Blastomussa corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral's tissues and provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis. Blastomussa corals can also capture small food particles from the water column to supplement their nutrition. Blastomussa corals can be sensitive to elevated levels of copper. It is important to avoid the use of copper-based medications or treatments in aquariums housing Blastomussa corals. Blastomussa corals are generally considered to be relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced reef keepers. They are generally hardy and can tolerate a range of water conditions, including temperature, salinity, and pH levels. They prefer low water flow and moderate lighting conditions. Blastomussa corals have fleshy polyps that are usually large and round, resembling small brains or doughnuts. They come in various colors, including green, brown, red, and pink, and some may have vibrant fluorescent pigments. When well-maintained, Blastomussa corals can form beautiful colonies and add visual interest to the aquarium. Blastomussa corals have the unique ability to retract their polyps into their protective skeletons when disturbed or threatened. This retraction mechanism helps protect the delicate polyps from potential harm. Blastomussa corals are also known to be relatively fast-growing compared to some other coral species. Overall, Blastomussa corals are a popular and visually appealing addition to reef aquariums. Typically peaceful and can coexist with a wide range of tank mates, including other coral species, small fish, and invertebrates. However, it is important to provide enough space between corals to prevent any aggressive interactions or territorial disputes. When properly cared for, Blastomussa corals can thrive and reproduce in the aquarium. They can develop new polyps and grow into larger colonies over time. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Blastomussa Corals are also known as Open Brain, Pineapple or Moon Coral. Less commonly seen than other Blastomussa Corals that are seen in the aquarium trade. The Blastomussa Corals are most commonly seen with shades of tan, brown or red coloration. Blastomussa Corals vary greatly in size and formation.
