Colored Honeycomb Coral

(Diploastrea heliopora)

Diploastrea corals are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean. They typically inhabit shallow reef environments. Like most corals, Diploastrea corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral's tissues and provide them with energy through photosynthesis. However, Diploastrea corals also have the ability to capture small prey, such as zooplankton, to supplement their nutritional needs. Diploastrea corals are generally considered to be easy to care for in aquariums. They prefer stable water conditions with appropriate temperature and salinity. Additionally, they require moderate lighting levels to support their symbiotic algae and moderate water flow. Regular water parameter monitoring and proper nutrient levels are essential for their health. Diploastrea corals generally have a moderate tolerance to copper, but it is still important to avoid high copper levels in the aquarium. Copper-based medications or treatments can be harmful to corals and other invertebrates, so it is best to exercise caution when using such treatments. Diploastrea corals form raised, dome shaped corallites that can develop into various shapes. The polyps have tentacles that they extend to capture prey or filter-feed, depending on the available food sources. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.

Diploastrea Corals are also be known as Moon Coral. Not often seen in the aquarium trade. Diploastrea corals are known for their intricate and unique patterns, generally displaying tan, brown or green color. Diplostrea Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
