Green Walking Dendro Coral
(Heteropsammia cochlea)
Heteropsammia corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the waters around Indonesia, Australia, and the Philippines. They are typically found in shallow reef environments, often in sandy or rubble areas where they can partially bury themselves. Heteropsammia corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral's tissues and provide them with energy through photosynthesis. While Heteropsammia corals can benefit from photosynthesis, they also rely on filter feeding to capture small planktonic organisms from the water. Heteropsammia corals are considered relatively hardy and suitable for aquariums. They require stable water conditions, including temperature, salinity, and water quality. Moderate to high lighting and gentle water flow are recommended. These corals are generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of other tank inhabitants. Heteropsammia corals are generally considered to be sensitive to high copper levels. It is important to avoid exposing them to elevated copper concentrations in the aquarium. Care should be taken to maintain appropriate copper levels to prevent any potential harm to the corals and other tank inhabitants. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Heteropsammia Corals are also known as Walking or Dendro Corals. They are quite unique in the fact that they build a commensal relationship with a worm. The worm lives in the base of the coral and moves the coral around the substrate. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Hetropsammia Corals are generally a yellow, green, tan or brown color. Heteropsammia Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
