Purple/Green Elephantnose Coral
(Mycedium elephantotus)
Mycedium corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of Tonga. Mycedium corals contain symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within their tissues, which provide them with a source of energy through photosynthesis. They heavily rely on photosynthesis for their nutritional needs. Mycedium corals are generally considered to be moderately easy to care for, making them suitable for intermediate to expert aquarists. They prefer moderate lighting and moderate to strong water flow. Mycedium corals generally have a moderate tolerance to copper. However, it is important to exercise caution when using copper-based medications or treatments in the aquarium, as high levels of copper can be harmful to corals and other invertebrates. Mycedium corals are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other coral species in the aquarium. However, it is important to provide sufficient space between corals to avoid aggressive interactions or overgrowth. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Mycedium Corals may also be known as Plate, Green Eyed Cup, Peacock or Elephant nose Corals. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Mycedium Corals are usually brown, grey, green or pink, may have green, white, or red oral discs. Mycedium Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
