Moonstone Coral

(Oulophyllia sp.)

Oulophyllia corals are found in tropical western and central Indo-Pacific regions. Oulophyllia corals are photosynthetic and host symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within their tissues. These algae provide the corals with energy through photosynthesis. However, Oulophyllia corals also have large polyps that can extend to catch planktonic prey, allowing them to supplement their nutritional needs through both photosynthesis and feeding. Oulophyllia corals are considered to be of moderate care level in aquariums. They require stable water parameters, including appropriate temperature, salinity, and water quality. Moderate to high lighting and low water flow are recommended for their optimal growth and health. Oulophyllia corals generally have a low tolerance to copper. It is important to avoid exposing them to copper-based medications or copper-containing materials in the aquarium, as it can be detrimental to their health. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.

Oulophyllia Corals are also be known as Moonstone Corals. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Oulophyllia Coral coloration ranges from green, gray to brown. Oulophyllia Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
