Pearl Bubble Coral

(Physogyra lichtensteini)

Physogyra corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and other coral reef ecosystems. They are typically found in shallow to moderate depths, attached to substrates such as rocks or the ocean floor. Physogyra corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae, which reside within their tissues and perform photosynthesis. This process allows the corals to gain energy and nutrients from sunlight. While photosynthesis is important for their overall health, Physogyra corals also require supplemental feeding to meet their nutritional needs. Physogyra corals are considered relatively easy in terms of care requirements. They prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow in the aquarium. Stable water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels, are important for their well-being. Regular water changes and proper maintenance of equipment are necessary for their overall health and growth. Physogyra corals generally have a low to moderate tolerance to copper. While they can tolerate small amounts of copper, it is crucial to maintain stable and appropriate copper levels in the aquarium. Copper-based medications should be used with caution and following proper dosing instructions to avoid harming the corals and other tank inhabitants. Physogyra corals are known for their unique bubble-like structures, which are formed by inflatable tissues called vesicles. These vesicles expand and contract, giving the coral its characteristic appearance. Physogyra corals are known for their fascinating expansion and contraction behaviors. They can inflate and deflate their vesicles, creating mesmerizing movements that resemble pulsating bubbles. Additionally, some species of Physogyra corals have fluorescent pigments that can give off a beautiful glow under appropriate lighting. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.

Physogyra Corals may also be known as Octopus, Pearl, or Grape Corals. Commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Physogyra Corals are generally a pale gray or dull green color. Physogyra Corals will vary greatly in size, when first being added to the aquarium they may appear to be shrivel small polyps but once acclimated and healthy will open up.
