Green Slipper Tongue Coral
(Polyphyllia sp.)
Polyphyllia corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the waters around Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit reef environments, typically found in areas with moderate water flow and high lighting. Like other coral species, Polyphyllia corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae. These algae reside within the coral's tissues and perform photosynthesis, providing the corals with energy and nutrients. However, Polyphyllia corals can also capture and consume small zooplankton and particulate matter from the water column. Polyphyllia corals have a moderate tolerance to copper. However, it's important to maintain stable and appropriate copper levels in the aquarium, as high concentrations can still be harmful to corals and other tank inhabitants. Regular monitoring and maintenance of water parameters is crucial. They are considered to be easy to care for but can be aggressive, careful placement will need to be considered before adding to the aquarium. Polyphyllia corals have a unique appearance with long fleshy tentacles that can retract into the sacs when disturbed or during feeding. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Polyphyllia Corals are also be known as Plate, Slipper or Tongue Corals. Not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The coloration of Polyphyllia corals can vary, ranging from shades of green, brown, and even fluorescent hues under certain lighting conditions. Polyphyllia Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
