Yellow Toadstool Leather Coral
(Sarcophyton elegans on Scleractinia)
Sarcophyton corals are found in various locations in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and the waters around Indonesia and Fiji. They typically inhabit shallow reef environments. Like other reef-building corals, Sarcophyton corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae. These algae live within the coral's tissues and provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis. However, Sarcophyton corals also have a higher dependency on capturing food particles from the water column compared to some other coral species. Sarcophyton corals are generally considered to be tolerant of copper levels within a normal range in reef aquariums. However, it's important to monitor and maintain appropriate copper levels, as excessive copper can still be harmful to their health. Sarcophyton corals are considered relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for beginner to intermediate reef aquarium enthusiasts. They prefer stable water conditions, moderate to high lighting, and moderate water flow. They can adapt well to a variety of aquarium setups. Sarcophyton corals have a distinctive and soft appearance, resembling a leather-like texture or mushroom cap. Sarcophyton corals are known for their ability to retract and expand their polyps, creating a dynamic and mesmerizing display in the aquarium. They are also known to release certain chemical compounds that may have antimicrobial properties, potentially helping to protect themselves from infections. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Sarcophyton Corals are also known as Mushroom, Leather or Trough Corals. They are commonly seen in the aquarium trade. They come in various colors, including shades of brown, green, yellow, and white. The shape and size of Sarcophyton corals can vary, ranging from small and compact colonies to larger and more elaborate forms.
