Red Tip Carnation Tree Coral
(Stereonephthya sp. on Scleractinia)
Stereonepthya corals are typically found in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, particularly in areas with moderate to strong water flow. They are commonly found in lagoons and reef slopes, often attached to hard substrates such as rocks or coral rubble. Stereonepthya corals rely on photosynthesis to some extent, but they primarily obtain their nutrition through filter feeding. They extend their polyps to capture plankton and organic matter from the water column. While they have symbiotic zooxanthellae algae in their tissues, they rely more on filter feeding for their energy needs. When feeding Stereonepthya corals, it's recommended to provide small, frequent feedings of planktonic foods to simulate their natural filter feeding behavior. Target-feeding with a pipette or using a feeding station can help ensure they receive sufficient nutrition. Stereonepthya corals are generally not tolerant of copper-based medications or high copper levels in the aquarium. Copper can be toxic to these corals and may lead to tissue damage or death. It is important to avoid copper treatments when keeping Stereonepthya corals. Stereonepthya corals can be challenging to care for in aquariums and are best suited for experienced reef keepers. They require stable water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels. Adequate water flow is crucial to provide them with sufficient food and prevent debris buildup. Additionally, they benefit from regular supplemental feeding of planktonic foods, such as phytoplankton or coral-specific liquid foods. Stereonepthya corals have a branching or tree-like structure, with multiple polyps extending from each branch. They can create a stunning visual display in the aquarium when properly cared for. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Stereonephthya Corals are also be known as Carnation Tree Corals. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade. The polyps are often brightly colored, including shades of red, pink, orange, and purple. Stereonephthya Corals will vary greatly in size and formation
