Fluorescent Horn Coral
(Hydnophora rigida)
Hydnophora corals are found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in areas with moderate water flow. They are typically found in shallow reef environments, attached to rocks or other substrates. Like most corals, Hydnophora corals have symbiotic zooxanthellae algae living within their tissues. These algae photosynthesize and provide the coral with nutrients and energy. Therefore, Hydnophora corals require moderate light levels in the aquarium to support their photosynthetic needs. Hydnophora corals generally have a moderate tolerance to copper. However, it is still important to avoid elevated copper levels in the aquarium, as it can cause harm to the corals and other tank inhabitants. Care should be taken when using copper-based medications or treatments in the aquarium. Hydnophora corals are considered moderately challenging to care for in aquariums. They require stable water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels. Hydnophora corals have a branching or knob-like appearance, with intricate skeletal structures formed by coralites (small polyp-like structures). The polyps extend during the day to feed and retract at night or when disturbed. They can create beautiful and visually appealing formations in the aquarium. Additionally, some Hydnophora species can display fluorescence under actinic lighting, enhancing their visual appeal. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Hydnophora Corals are also be known as Velvet Horn, Furry or Thorny Coral. Not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Hydnophora Corals are quite beautiful and come in various colors, including shades of brown, green, and pink. . Hydnophora Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
