Metallic Green Merulina Coral

(Merulina ampliata)

Merulina corals are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. They typically inhabit shallow reef environments, often forming colonies on hard substrates such as rocks or dead coral skeletons. Like other reef-building corals, Merulina corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae reside within the coral's tissues and provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis. Merulina corals rely on a combination of photosynthesis and capturing prey from the water column for their energy needs. Merulina corals are generally considered to be a bit difficult to care for, making them suitable for the more experienced hobbyists. They prefer high lighting levels and moderate water flow. Stable water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and alkalinity, are important for their health and growth. Merulina corals have a moderate tolerance to copper. While they can withstand low levels of copper, it is important to avoid exposing them to high concentrations of copper, as it can be toxic to corals and other invertebrates in the aquarium. Merulina corals have a distinctive brain-like or honeycomb appearance, with interconnected valleys and ridges. Their unique structure adds visual interest and texture to the aquarium. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.

Merulina Corals are also known as Ruffle Ridge, Lettuce or Ridge Corals. Not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Merulina Corals are quite beautiful and come in various colors, including shades of brown, green, and pink. Merulina Corals will vary greatly in size and formation.
