Umbrella Mushroom (per polyp)
(Discosoma neglecta)
Discosoma corals are found in various regions of the world's oceans, including the Indo-Pacific, the Caribbean, and the Red Sea. They are typically found in shallow, rocky areas, attached to rocks or other substrates. Discosoma corals have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae, which reside within their tissues. These algae provide the corals with nutrients through photosynthesis, converting light energy into organic compounds. However, Discosoma corals also feed on small particles in the water, supplementing their nutritional needs. Discosoma corals are generally considered to be relatively easy to care for in aquariums. They are adaptable to a range of lighting and water flow conditions however they prefer moderate light levels and low to moderate water flow. Water parameters, including temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels, should be maintained within appropriate ranges for optimal health. Discosoma corals are generally tolerant of copper levels within acceptable ranges. However, it is important to maintain proper copper levels in the aquarium, as high concentrations of copper can be toxic to corals and other invertebrates. It is advisable to avoid using copper-based medications or treatments in a reef aquarium with Discosoma corals. Discosoma corals typically form colonies composed of individual polyps. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Discosoma Corals are also be known as Wagon Wheel, Marble, or Radiating Mushroom Coral. Commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The polyps have a circular or disc-shaped appearance. They come in a wide array of colors and color combinations, they can exhibit a range of patterns, including solid colors, stripes, and spots. Discosoma corals have the ability to inflate and deflate their bodies, allowing them to adjust their shape and size in response to changes in light, water flow, and feeding. .
