White Short Stem Waving Hand Coral
(Anthelia sp. on Scleractinia)
Anthelia corals are found in various locations across the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around Indonesia, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef. They are commonly found in shallow reef environments, particularly on reef slopes and in areas with moderate to strong water flow and moderate to high lighting. Like many other coral species, Anthelia corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae. These algae reside within the coral's tissues and perform photosynthesis, converting sunlight into energy that the coral utilizes for growth and survival. However, Anthelia corals also rely on filter-feeding to capture and consume small particles from the water column. Anthelia corals generally have a moderate to high tolerance to copper, but it's important to note that copper can still be harmful to corals and other tank inhabitants. It's crucial to maintain stable and appropriate copper levels in the aquarium and to carefully follow any treatment protocols if copper-based medications are used. Anthelia corals have a unique appearance with numerous polyps connected by a fleshy mat or base. The polyps extend their tentacles, creating a mesmerizing "waving hand" effect as they sway in the water current. Anthelia corals are known for their rapid growth and spreading nature. They can form large colonies and cover significant areas of rockwork or substrate in the aquarium. This growth pattern makes them ideal for filling empty spaces and providing a lush appearance to the reef tank. However, their fast growth also requires occasional trimming or pruning to prevent overgrowth and shading of neighboring corals. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Anthelia Corals are also known as Waving Hand, Pulse Feather or Glove Coral. Commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Anthelia Corals are quite beautiful with a range of colors. However most commonly seen with shades of tan, browns or grays. Anthelia Corals will vary greatly in size and formation and will appear shriveled when first adding to the aquarium.
