Blue Sympodium Coral
(Sympodium sp. on Scleractinia)
Sympodium corals are found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Pacific Ocean. Sympodium corals contain symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within their tissues, which provide them with a source of energy through photosynthesis. They heavily rely on photosynthesis for their nutritional needs. Sympodium corals are generally considered to be moderately easy to care for. They can tolerate a range of lighting and water flow conditions, although they typically prefer moderate light levels and moderate to strong water flow. Stable water parameters, proper filtration, and regular water changes are important for their well-being. Sympodium corals generally have a moderate tolerance to copper. However, it is important to exercise caution when using copper-based medications or treatments in the aquarium, as high levels of copper can be harmful to corals and other invertebrates. Sympodium corals are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other coral species in the aquarium. However, it is important to provide sufficient space between corals to avoid aggressive interactions or overgrowth. Corals will benefit from the addition of Calcium, Strontium, Iodine, Magnesium and Trace Elements.
Sympodium Corals are also known as Pulse or Waving Hand Corals. Commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The Sympodium Corals are a quite beautiful blue and green color. Sympodium Corals will vary greatly in size, when first being added to the aquarium they may appear to be shrivel small polyps but once acclimated and healthy will open up.
