Flathead Perch
(Rainfordia opercularis)
Rainfordia Basslets should be added to well established aquariums with plenty of rockwork, caves, cracks, crevices and coral overhangs. Provide a diet of meaty enriched foods along with algae matter. Keep well fed with multiple feedings per day but do not overfeed. May harass crustaceans and smaller fish. Although a secretive and shy fish that generally only comes out of its home to eat they can be territorial. Avoid adding larger inhabitants to the aquarium as they may harass this shy fish. Juveniles tend to be more colorful than adults.
The Flathead Perch is also known as the Rainford's Perch. The Flathead Perch are one of the rarest of the Basslet's, they are very seldomly seen in the aquarium trade. They have a quite unique coloration with an overall orange body, black and lilac stripes running horizontally, and a false eyespot at the base of the tail. Flathead Perch can grow to almost 6".
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 70 gallons or larger for this species.
