Ruby Scat
(Scatophagus argus)
Scatophagus are also known as Scats and should be added to large well established aquariums. Scats are voracious eaters of both plant and animals. Provide a diverse diet of meaty enriched foods along with plants, they may pick at small invertebrates. Scats are hardy, social, shoaling fish and should be housed with multiple scats. Scats are curious and not afraid of other inhabitants making them a great addition to aquariums. Juveniles tend to inhabit freshwater as they mature begin moving to saltwater. Juveniles and adults will exhibit color differences along with male and female body shape differences.
The Ruby Scat is also known as the Red Scat. Uncommonly seen in the aquarium trade the juveniles and adults will appear differently. Juveniles are a basically a bronze with numerous brown or black spots. The spots will become darker but less distinct on the lower half of the body, and the bronze color becomes flashier . Ruby Scat can grow to 15".
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 125 gallons or larger for this species.
