Blacksmith Chromis
(Chromis punctipinnis)
Chromis should be added to well established aquariums with plenty of room to swim. Plenty of rock work should be provided for resting or hiding. Chromis prefer a strong water current which in the wild provides them with a large supply of Zooplankton. Chromis readily accept most diets of meaty and algae based foods which should be fed multiple times daily to satisfy their grazing behavior. Chromis should be housed with other peaceful fish so they are not out competed for food. Chromis are generally reef safe but research each species carefully to ensure adequate habitat. Juveniles and adults may display color differences. Adults may also see color differences during courting and spawning, males tend to be larger than females.
The Blacksmith Chromis are also known as the Blacksmith Damselfish. Very rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Juveniles are a two tone color with the front part of their body being blue to gray and the back part a brown to orange color. As the fish matures the color changes to a blue black color with black spots on its body towards the tail. They can grow to a little over 10".
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 100 gallons or larger for this species.
