Zebra Striped Flounder

(Zebrias zebra)

Flounders should be added to large aquariums with a deep wide open sand bed and rocky rubble. They are bottom dwelling fish that will partially bury and camouflage themselves in order to ambush benthic small fish and crustaceans. Juvenile Flounders start out life with an eye on either side of their bodies however, as they mature one eye will migrate so that both eyes will reside on the same side of the body. If the Flounder is blind or has eye damage they will have a great deal of difficulty camouflaging themselves as they are not able to see.

Zebra Striped Flounder are also sometimes known as the Tiger Sole or Zebra Flounder and are a species of flatfish that is occasionally seen in the aquarium trade. Zebra Sole has a flattened, oval-shaped body and a pointed head. It has a distinctive black and white striped pattern, with alternating vertical bars of black and white running the length of its body. Their fins are transparent, and their eyes are located on the top side of the body. Zebra Striped Flounder can grow up to 10 inches in length, but are typically smaller in captivity.

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 75 gallons or larger for this species.
