Swallowtail Hawkfish

Hawkfish should be added to aquariums with plenty of rock work. Adult Cyprinocirrhites Hawkfish lack a swim bladder. Be sure to provide ample ledges, caves, cracks and crevices in order for them to perch and hide. Most Hawkfish are small, hardy and quite colorful making them a good addition to a home aquarium. All Hawkfish start life as a female with the largest most dominant fish becoming a male. Hawkfish are carnivores and will consume very small fish and other invertebrates. Feed a varied diet of meaty and algae based foods multiple times daily. Cyprinocirrhites Hawkfish are somewhat feisty and will defend their territory, house one per aquarium. Cyprinocirrhites should be housed with tank mates that are not easily harrassed.
Swallowtail Hawkfish are also sometimes known as Lyretail Hawkfish. Occasionaly seen in the aquarium trade. Swallowtail Hawkfish are a yellow to an orange or brown color with mottling on its body and head and dark blue to green eyes. Swallowtail Hawkfish can grow to a little over 6".
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 50 gallons or larger for this species.
