Red Hogfish
(Decodon puellaris)
Decodon Hogfish should be added to aquariums with ample rock work, cracks, crevice's and caves for hiding and resting. Provide a deep sand bed as Hogfish are noted to forage through the sand with their long snouts looking for invertebrates. They are hermaphrodites meaning most are born as females and at some point in their life may turn into a male. Juveniles and adult males will have marked color differences. Harems can be kept in the aquarium with one male and several females if added at the same time. A diet rich in meaty based foods should be provided for continued health. Hogfish can jump be sure to provide an aquarium with a well fitted lid. Most Hogfish are hermaphrodites, meaning they are may turn from female to male at some point in their lives.
Red Hogfish are also sometimes known as Red Pigfish. Not often seen in the aquarium trade. Juvenile and adult Red Hogfish will have slightlyly different coloration. Juveniles are red with two eyespots. One on the rear of its dorsal fin and the other on the top of its caudal peduncle. Adults are red with a white belly and three yellow stripes on their heads. Red Hogfish can grow to a little over 12".
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 125 gallons or larger for this species.
