Rooster Hogfish

(Lachnolaimus maximus)

Lachnolaimus Hogfish should be added to aquariums with ample rock work, cracks, crevice's and caves for hiding and resting. Provide a deep sand bed as Hogfish are noted to forage through the sand with their long snouts looking for invertebrates. They are hermaphrodites meaning most are born as females and at some point in their life may turn into a male. Juveniles and adult males will have marked color differences. Harems can be kept in the aquarium with one male and several females if added at the same time. A diet rich in meaty based foods should be provided for continued health. Hogfish can jump be sure to provide an aquarium with a well fitted lid.

Rooster Hogfish are also sometimes known simply as the Hogfish. Rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Rooster Hogfish coloration is variable depending on its age, sex and habitat. Generally white to a mottled brown or red with a black spot on its dorsal fin. Males are generally more colorful than females or juveniles. Rooster Hogfish can grow to almost 36".

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 300 gallons or larger for this species.
