Cockerel Wrasse
(Pteragogus enneacanthus)
Pteragogus Wrasse very shy and secretive and should be added to a well established aquarium with plenty of swimroom. Provide plenty of rockwork with caves, cracks and crevices for hunting and hiding. Pteragogus Wrasse may harrass smaller tank mates. Pteragogus Wrasse may not eat readily when first introduced to the aquarium. If seeing an unwilliness to eat add fortified live mysis, Brine, Glass or Grass shrimp to their carnivorous diet, fed multiple times daily. Pteragogus Wrasse are not reef safe and will prey on benthic invertebrates. Wrasse are hermaphrodites meaning they start as juveniles/females but at some point in their life may turn into a male. May see male and female color differences. Provide an aquarium with a tight fitting lid as they may jump.
The Cockerel Wrasse are also sometimes known as the Cockatiel or Redstriped Wrasse. Occasionally seen in the aquarium trade. Color may vary depending on maturity of the fish. Cockerel Wrasse are a mottled red and white color with small dark spots, and a yellow to green ringed ocellus on its gill cover, as the fish matures the ring becomes oblong and thin blue lines below its eye. Cockerel Wrasse can grow to almost 6".
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 50 gallons or larger for this species.
