Long Arm Octopus
(Abdopus sp.)
Abdopus Octopus should be added to well established aquariums with a sandy bottom and a tight fitting, weighted lid as they are very strong and capable of lifting the aquarium lid. Octopus mate only once, the males will deposit their sperm and then die. The females are able to hold sperm for a couple of months, however once they have cared for the eggs and babies hatch the female then dies as well. Octopus are able to quickly change color in order to camouflage themselves to avoid potential danger as well as secreting a dark ink cloud to escape. Provide a diet rich in small pieces of meaty foods. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
The Long Arm Octopus is also known as the White V Octopus. Long Are Octopus are quite shy and are generally only seen peeking their head out of their hiding place. Not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. Long Arm Octopus are generally tan or a brownish red color with a "V" shaped mark on the back of their heads. Long Arm Octopus bodies can grow to a little over 2" however as its name suggests their legs are long and can grow to almost 6".
