Red Feather Duster
(Spirobranchus sp. on Porites sp.)
Spirobranchus Feather dusters are often found in coral reef environments and other shallow marine habitats. They inhabit crevices and indentations in hard substrates such as coral skeletons or rocks. Their colorful crowns extend from their burrows and are often seen protruding from the substrate. They are filter feeders. They use their feathery crowns, called radioles, to capture plankton and other small food particles from the water. The captured particles are then transported down the radioles to the worm's mouth for consumption. Invertebrates do not tolerate copper medications and are sensitive to water quality changes.
Spirobranchus Featherdusters are also sometimes known as Red Feather Dusters or Christmas Tree Worms. They are frequently seen in the aquarium trade. Spiro branchus Featherdusters come in a variety of vibrant colors ranging fro red, yellow, orange, blue, or a combination of these colors often resembling a Christmas Tree. Their can grow to slightly over a 1/2".
