Maroon Blubber Jellyfish
(Catostylus sp.)
Catostylus jellyfish are commonly found in warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around Australia and Southeast Asia. Catostylus jellyfish are primarily passive drifters, moving with the ocean currents. They are not strong swimmers and are often found near the water's surface. Their diet consists of small planktonic organisms that they capture using their stinging tentacles. When prey comes into contact with the tentacles, the nematocysts immobilize it, and the tentacles transport the captured prey to the jellyfish's mouth. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Catostylus Jellyfish are commonly referred to as Blubber Jellyfish. They are occasionally collected for the aquarium trade. The coloration of Catostylus Jellyfish can vary but often includes shades of Blue or Maroon. They can grow to up to 8".
