Blue Spotted Sea Hare
(Bursatella leachii)
Bursatella sea hares are found in warm tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. They are commonly found in shallow coastal areas with seagrass beds and rocky substrates. Bursatella Sea Hares are herbivorous and primarily feed on various types of algae, especially green algae. They will consume large quantities of algae's making them valuable in marine ecosystems. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Bursatella Nudibranchs are commonly referred to as Shaggy, Spotted or Leach's Sea Hare. They are sometimes collected for the aquarium trade. They have a distinctive appearance with a mottled or spotted pattern on their body. The coloration can vary but often includes shades of brown, black, and white. These sea hares can grow to a relatively large size for sea slugs, with some individuals reaching lengths of up to about 12" or more.
