Blue Velvet Nudibranch

(Chelidonura varians)

Chelidonura nudibranchs are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and various other locations in the Pacific Ocean. They inhabit coral reefs, rocky substrates, and other marine environments where flatworms are abundant. They are generally found in shallow, well-lit areas. These nudibranchs are carnivorous and primarily feed on small flatworms, which are abundant on coral reefs. They use a specialized feeding structure called a radula to rasp and consume their prey. Chelidonura nudibranchs are often observed crawling along the substrate in search of their flatworm prey. They have a characteristic gliding movement, which is different from the typical rhythmic undulation of many other nudibranchs. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.

Chelidonura varians Nudibranch are commonly referred to as Blue Velvet Nudibranch or Head Sheild Slug. They are occasionally collected for the aquarium trade. They are a beautiful black color with blue edging. They can grow to up to 3".
