Amber Pen Shell
(Pinna carnea)
Pinna Mussels are primarily found in coastal marine environments, including sandy or muddy substrates, seagrass beds, and shallow waters. They are often anchored in the substrate by a byssal thread, a strong protein fiber that the mussel secretes. Pinna Mussels are filter-feeding and use their long and delicate gills to filter small plankton and particles from the water, which it then consumes as a source of nutrition. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Pinna carnea are also sometimes known as Amber Pen Shells or Noble Pen Shells. They are not typically seen in the aquarium trade but are more often seen in their natural habitat. Amber Pen Shells have a slender, elongated shell that is typically light brown or pale yellowish-brown in color. The shell may sometimes exhibit a slightly iridescent or pearly sheen. They can grow quite large reach up to 12".
