Squamosa Clam

(Tridacna squamosa)

Tridacna Clams should be added to well established aquariums with a sandy or small gravel bottomed aquarium. They should also be provided strong lighting, good water flow and the addition of calcium, strontium and iodine for long term success. Tridacna Clams have the ability to detect light changes with the eye spots on their mantles outer edge. Tridacna Clams receive most of their nutrients from photosynthesis. They also filter the aquarium water for small particles but will benefit from small pieces of meaty foods as well as phytoplankton. Invertebrates do not tolerate copper medications and are sensitive to salinity changes. Never forcefully remove a clam if it has attached itself as it will cause damage to their foot.

The Squamosa Clam is also known as the Fluted Giant Clam. Every clam will have a unique color and pattern however most Squamosa Clams will be brown, yellow or green with Ultra colors being the most intense coloration. Commonly seen in the aquarium trade. Squamosa Clams will have widely spaced rows of flutes. Squamosa clams are considered to be easy to care for in the home aquarium. Squamosa Clams can grow to 16".
