Gold Ring Cowrie
(Monetaria annulus)
Monetaria Cowries are found in tropical and subtropical marine environments around the world. They inhabit coral reefs, rocky shores, and shallow coastal waters. Cowries often hide in crevices, under rocks, or in other sheltered areas during the day. They are primarily herbivorous grazers that feed on algae, particularly the thin films of microalgae that grow on surfaces such as rocks and corals. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with sea urchins, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Monetaria annulus Snails are also sometimes known as Gold Ring Cowrie's. They are somewhat commonly seen in the aquarium trade. The shells of Monetaria annulus are typically glossy and smooth, with a shiny white to pale cream background color. They are characterized by a brown or reddish-brown ring-like pattern that encircles the shell's dorsal surface, which gives them their common name. They can grow up to 2 1/2".
