Bumble Bee Shrimp

(Gnathophyllum americanum)

Gnathophyllum Shrimp are primarily found in shallow marine environments, including coral reefs, rocky shores, and sandy substrates. They often live in burrows they excavate in sand or mud. Gnathophyllum Shrimp are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of small prey such as small crustaceans, worms, and detritus. They use their snapping behavior to stun or kill their prey, making it easier to consume. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums. Magnesium and Iodine are important components for shrimp as they need these for molting.

Gnathophyllum americanum Shrimp are also sometimes known as Bumble Bee or American Snapping Shrimp. They are not often seen in the aquarium trade. Bumble Bee Shrimps color can vary, but they often have a yellow or white body with black stripes. They may have some patterns or color variations. They can grow to a little over 1 1/2".
