Ghost Mantis Shrimp
(Odontodactylus scyllarus)
Odontodactylus Shrimp are generally found in various marine habitats, ranging from shallow coastal waters to deeper ocean environments. They inhabit coral reefs, rocky substrates, sandy bottoms, and seagrass beds. Odontodactylus Shrimp are especially diverse and abundant in tropical and subtropical regions. They are carnivorous predators with a highly varied diet. Their diet includes a wide range of prey, such as small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and even other mantis shrimps. They use their powerful claws to capture and subdue their prey. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with sea urchins, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums. Magnesium and Iodine are important components for shrimp as they need these for molting.
Odontodactylus scyllarus are also sometimes known as Peacock Mantis or Ghosy Mantis Shrimp. They are not often seen in the aquarium trade. They are primarily green with orange legs and leopard spots. They can grow up to 7".
