Red Tree Sponge
(Axinella sp.)
Axinella Sponges are found in marine environments, typically in shallow tropical and subtropical waters. They can be found attached to hard substrates such as rocks, coral reefs, and other underwater structures. Axinella Sponges are filter feeders, extracting small particles and organic matter from the water that passes through their porous structure. They play a role in marine ecosystems by contributing to nutrient cycling and water filtration. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Axinella Sponges are also known as Tree Sponge. These Sponge do prefer cooler water temperatures and are not a good candidate for most home aquariums due to their temperature requirements. They are generally yellow, orange or red. It's important to note that sponges are diverse, and their sizes and shapes can be influenced by environmental factors and the specific conditions of their habitat.
