Sand Sifting Sea Star
(Astropecten polycanthus)
Astropecten Sea Star should be added to well established aquariums with a deep bed of sand for sifting. Astropecten Sea Star will consume a great deal of detritus and uneaten foods as well as tiny shrimp, urchins, mollusks, bivalves or other tiny sea stars. Invertebrates do not tolerate copper medications. Astropecten Sea Star are great for beginner hobbyists as they are easy to care for and peaceful.
The Sand Sifting Sea Star is also known as the Sand Star. Commonly seen in the aquarium trade. Sand Sifting Sea Stars are very lovely with brown and tan bands and is covered in short spines. Be sure not to expose the Sand Sifting Sea Star to air. There are no distinguishing characteristics between males and females. Sand Sifting Sea Stars can grow to 4".
