Pillow Sea Star
(Culcita sp.)
Culcita Sea Stars are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean. They inhabit various types of marine environments, such as coral reefs, rocky shores, and sandy or muddy bottoms. Culcita Sea Stars are primarily scavengers and detritivores. They feed on a variety of organic matter, including dead animals, algae, and detritus found on the seafloor. Their tube feet and specialized structures on the undersides of their arms help them capture and ingest food particles. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Culcita Sea Stars may also be known as Pillow Sea Star or Cushion Star. Pillow Sea Stars are not often collected for the aquarium trade. Cushion stars typically exhibit a range of colors, including shades of brown, orange, red, and even pink. These Sea Stars can grow up to 8".
