Blood Red Feather Sea Lily
(Heterometra sp.)
Heterometra Feather Stars are echinoderms characterized by their feathery arms, which they use for filter feeding. They are commonly found in marine environments, especially in tropical and subtropical oceans. Feather Stars attach themselves to substrates using their flexible stalks, and they can crawl and swim using their arms. They can also inhabit deeper waters. Feather Stars use their arms to create water currents that bring food particles to their mouths located at the center of their arms. They have specialized structures called pinnules on their arms that are covered in tiny tube feet, which help with capturing food particles. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.
Heterometra Sea Lilies are also known as Feather Sea Stars. They are not normally seen in the aquarium trade as they tend to be difficult to keep. Sea lilies come in a range of colors, including various shades of pink, purple, red, brown, and sometimes white or yellow. They can grow up to 6".
