Brittle Sea Star
(Ophiocoma echinata)
Ophiocoma Sea Stars are commonly found in various marine habitats, from shallow coastal waters to deeper ocean environments. They inhabit coral reefs, rocky substrates, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms. They are often found hidden within crevices or under rocks during the day. They are primarily scavengers and detritivores feeding on organic debris, plankton, and small particles present in the water column or on the ocean floor. Their arms are used to capture and manipulate food particles, which are then transported to their mouth. Invertebrates do not tolerate copper medications.
Ophiocoma Sea Stars are often known as Brittle or Serpent Sea Stars. Ophiocoma Sea Stars are somewhat commonly seen in the aquarium trade. Ophiocoma Sea Stars are often brown, reddish-brown, or greenish, and some may have distinct patterns and markings. The arms of brittle stars are long and slender, giving them a serpentine appearance. They may grow to be 12".
