Banded Longspine Urchin

(Echinothrix calamari)

urchins are often found in rocky and coral reef habitats in the Indo-Pacific region. They inhabit intertidal zones and subtidal areas with rocky substrates, where they can use their spines to anchor themselves to crevices and feed on algae. Echinothrix Urchins are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of algae and detritus found on rocks and substrate. Urchins may disturb substrate and other tank inhabitants. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with sea urchins, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.

Echinothrix calamari are also sometimes known as Banded Longspine Urchins. They are frequently seen in the aquarium trade. Banded Longspine Urchins have alternating light and dark colored spines with some being strong and thick while others are hollow, shorter and finer. They can grow up to 9".
