Hairy Pincushion Urchin

(Tripneustes gratilla)

Tripneustes Urchins are typically found in shallow, sandy or rubble areas near coral reefs, seagrass beds, and rocky substrates in the Indo-Pacific region. They may also inhabit lagoons and protected coastal waters. Tripneustes Urchins are primarily herbivores, feeding on algae and seagrasses. They play a vital role in controlling algae growth in reef ecosystems, which is essential for maintaining the health and balance of the reef. By consuming algae, they prevent overgrowth that can negatively impact coral and other reef organisms. Urchins may disturb substrate and other tank inhabitants.

Tripneustes gratilla is commonly known as Hairy Pincushion, Collector or Helmet Urchins. They are somewhat commonly collected for the aquarium trade. They are typically greenish-brown to olive-green in color. However, the color can vary depending on their diet, environmental conditions, and geographic location. They can grow up to 6".
